Fishing and Canoeing
Some of Australia’s best inland fishing is in our region. Enjoy fishing for silver and golden perch under the shade of the majestic red gum tree lined Wimmera River (permanent water) or experience the thrill of reeling in your catch at Lake Hindmarsh, the largest inland freshwater lake in Victoria. Please note that when Victoria is in drought, Lake Hindmarsh and some of our other important fishing holes are often dry, please check for seasonal conditions.
Whether you are dangling a line, birdwatching, or having fun with the kids, canoeing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. During and after seasonal rain the Wimmera River offers an exceptional extended canoe journey, from Dimboola through to Lake Hindmarsh. In dryer times the river level is controlled by weirs at both Dimboola and Jeparit allowing for some half day to full day paddles. There are plenty of river access points in and around Dimboola and Jeparit, including newly installed fishing pontoons, as well as along River Road between these two townships. Nhill Lake is another great location for some fun family canoeing.
The newly installed fishing pontoons in Jeparit (pictured) and Dimboola offer all year round fishing access to parts of the Wimmera River holding permanent water.
