Flora and Fauna

People visit our region for many reasons; its wealth of history, insight into our agriculture, small, friendly towns. But it is our unique flora and fauna that we are best known for.

If you love Australia’s wildlife and wildflowers, you have come to exactly the right place.

Catch a glimpse of the endangered and unique Malleefowl at Little Desert Nature Lodge, walk in the bush to see bats, possums, echidnas and many unique and sometimes endangered animals.

Don’t wait for Spring to visit, there are wildflowers all year round. However, the Little Desert is renowned for its orchids from August - November. If you love painting, photography, sketching as well as exploring our flora and fauna, you will find yourself captivated and want to stay longer or to return. There are accommodation and camping options and you are always welcome.

You don’t need much to make this an experience of a lifetime, just a hat, lots of water, your camera, your bird and flower books and maybe your 4WD (though there is plenty to see without one).

And bring your sense of adventure because you will want to explore the whole region, and your family and friends because an experience like this is even better shared.

Just some of the places flora and fauna lovers should check out:

Wyperfeld National Park home to more than 200 species of birds, about 520 species of plants and the unique silky mouse and Mitchell’s hopping mouse.

Little Desert National Park for its wildflowers, Malleefowl, nature walks.

Lake Hindmarsh for its breeding colonies of pelicans and water birds, unique butterflies and parrots

Big Desert for more than 50 species of lizards and snakes, and malleefowls

Nine Creeks Reserve Dimboola and Nhill Swamp boardwalk, which includes a bird hide, for bird watching

An emerging Long-tongue Shell-orchid, one of the many orchids found in the Little Desert National Park and local nature reserves.
